Moto 360 Sport - 2 Weeks

So it's been almost 2 weeks with my Moto 360 Sport and I have to say, I'm pretty happy with it.

The hardest thing to get to use with this watch, was just wearing it. I haven't worn a watch in probably 10 years, so having something on my wrist all day, especially when at the computer, was very new to me.

The other thing I found (and still find) a little difficult, is knowing I can leave my phone in one place and not carry it around the house with me. lol, I know, but habits are hard to break.

As far as the battery life goes, I got a pretty good flow going now. Usually when I put it on its charger at night, there is still over 50% battery life left. Awesome. Turning off the display during a workout session, really make a difference. I also turn off the display when I have my phone near me.

So the one beef that keeps coming up by others, is the strap. Yes, it collects dust and lint a little, but really, a damp cloth and a wipe... clean again. This is not a gripe that would keep me from buying it.

The one last issue that many complained about is that it is not a full fitness watch, i.e. you can't take it swimming. Really? Ya, could care less about that, I'm not a triathlete. What this watch is, is a "smartwatch" that allows me to get notifications, respond to text, chat and e-mail via voice and gives me nice "fitness tracking" abilities (steps, heart rate and calorie burn). Also, when I start running again, GPS for mapping my runs.

All in all, I am very happy with it. I just hope, I get more than a few years out of it, as I won't be buying a new one every 2 years, like some people do with their phones. Unfortunately, devices like this, phones & tablets are don't seem to last very long. Good for the manufacturers I guess, because we keep buying them.

Moto 360 Sport Series - Day 2

Today I'm mixing things up a bit to see how the battery life is affected.

6:00 AM

Took the watch off its charging station and put it into "theatre mode", meaning the display is off until I turn it on. I might add, it only took an hour to fully charge last night.

11:00 AM

Only checked my watch a few times, currently at 94%!

4:00 PM - Workout Session

For my workout session I once again started an "in-door" workout to track my stats and left the display at "always on". When the workout was complete I put it back in "theatre mode".

7:30 PM

Watch is at 72% Success! I have now put it back in always on mode and will leave it as is for the rest of the night.

So, I think the trick here is, if there are times during the day when you don't need to be getting notifications on your wrist, or watching the time, put the watch in theatre mode and just push the button to wake it up, when you need it.

Tomorrow, I'm going to attempt the same thing as today, but during the workout session put the watch in theatre mode during the workout and only wake it back up to stop the workout.

Moto 360 Sport Series - Day 1

Day 1:

Today is the first full day I'll be using my watch. Today started at 5AM strapping my watch, after it being on charge overnight.

I leave my watch in always on mode to I can see what time it is without tapping my watch. I want to see how this affects the battery life.

2:00 PM

As of this part of the day, so far I've received a few e-mail notifications, a message about traffic for when I leave for the gym and as well, viewed and replied to a few text message using the (voice to text). I was pretty impressed, how easy it was to do. Right now my watch is at 68% and my phone is at 63% (it did an update this afternoon).

4:15 PM Bootcamp Time!

I normally get to class about 3:30 and do a light workout and warm-up. I used the watch to track that. It was active for about 18 minutes.

I then started another workout session to track the actual bootcamp class. That session lasted 44 minutes.

I will say that wearing the watch during a workout is not a problem at all, it really doesn't get in my way.

After bootcamp I used the watch a few times to respond to notifications, but other than that, nothing.

8:00 PM DOA!

The watch shuts off, battery dead. Well that certainly didn't make it all the way through the day. It lasted a total of 15 hours.

So, today I had the watch in "always on mode", meaning you can always see the time. Tomorrow I'll put it in "theatre mode" which leaves the display off until I tap it. Tomorrow will be a similar routine, all day at work, then bootcamp.

Let's see if tomorrow is any better.

Moto 360 Sport Series - Introduction

Last week I purchased the Moto 360 Sport through Telus here in Canada and it arrived yesterday! Woo! After taxes it was $379.00 + tax, ouch!

I have been reading about this smart watch since it was first announced and even with some of the negative reviews I still think it was the right device for me. I was not interested in a "GPS Assisted" device such as the Apple iWatch ($449 + tax) or the Fitbit Blaze ($249.95 + tax).

Some of the negative comments included such things as:
  • you have to charge nightly
  • high price
  • strap picks up lint & dirt
  • battery life
  • limited features when running (i.e. no auto pause and no laps)
I wanted to write my experiences in case your expectations are similar to mine. I'm not looking for a fitness watch that does it all, I don't need it for biking, swimming or advanced training. I workout on a regular basis and run from time to time and go on the odd hike. That's about it. I do have a Garmin 405 running watch and I've only ever used the basic settings with it. That watch now is starting to show its age and not working 100% of the time, so soon(ish) I was going to have to get something else.

What are my reasons for wanting the Moto 360 Sport?
  • want to be able to leave my phone (Nexus 5) in my pocket or backpack and getting and acting on notifications, from my wrist
  • those days I want to go for a run (phone free)
  • monitoring my fitness level during bootcamp workouts (phone free)
  • quick access to seeing what time it is
So during this series I'll be writing down my thoughts, likes, dislikes & tips as my new toy and I get to know one another.

Facebook Posts - Who Can See Them?

Believe it or not, I still see many of my friends posting things to Facebook that are public, when I'm sure they should not be. Example: Pictures of your young children.

While some make everything public on purpose, many of us can be doing it accidentally. This could happen because maybe you are new to Facebook, or perhaps using a app to post to Facebook for you.

This can easily be solved in a few clicks of the mouse.

While logged into your Facebook account via your web browser:

  1. Click on the "lock" icon in top blue bar
  2. Click on the "Who Can See My Stuff" toggle 
  3. Select "Friends" for the "Who can see my future posts?" option.
You are done.

Experimenting with some Hi Key Lighting

This weekend we had a snow storm, so what better time to set up my gear and take some photos! Only one problem, no model. Guess that means you are stuck with me!

The last time I messed around doing a self portrait it was a pain in the butt. You see, I don't have a remote trigger for my camera, so it is a lot of back and forth using the timer. Today I got geeky and first tethered my camera to my iMac, then loaded up Canon's Utility software to control my camera. Then... using my iPad, I remotely controlled the software on my iMac via LogMeIn. Worked great! I stood in front of my backdrop, did my pose, and tapped a button. Bam!

So, on to the actual shoot.

In my first set up, I was trying to mimic the "Killer Clamshell" look described here ... I modified it a little.

Here is a look from my iPad looking back to the camera:

- AB400 in soft box behind me at 1/4 power
- AB800 above camera at 1/4 power
- Camera at F8 / 1/250th / ISO100 
- approx 7ft from subject
- Lens 70-200 f/4 

Here are two shots, from this set up. I really like how the light from behind, wraps around my head and shoulders.

In the next set up, I was attempting the clamshell, but from each side rather than top, as seen here:

Set up #2:

- 2 AB400 on each side of subject at 1/8 power
- 1 AB800 at background at 1/4 power
- 1 AB1600 at background at 1/8 power
- 2 umbrellas on background
- 1 umbrella subject left
- 1 soft box subject right

The 3rd set up I went for the top/bottom clam shell, with 2 lights on the background.

Set up #3:

- 1 AB400 high at 1/4 power - softbox

- 1 AB400 low at 1/4 power - umbrella
- 1 AB800 at background at 1/4 power
- 1 AB1600 at background at 1/8 power
- 2 umbrellas on background


And in my final set up, #4 ... it was identical to #3, except I did not use a light from below.

Set up #4:

- 1 AB400 high at above 1/2 power - softbox

- 1 AB800 at background at 1/4 power
- 1 AB1600 at background at 1/8 power
- 2 umbrellas on background


I have to say, they all have something different about them, but I really like #1 and #3 the most. I think if in 3 and 4, if I had of stood closer to the background, some of the light bouncing off it, would have shown a hit of wrapping around me, like in #1.

After all that, I think my favorite pic of the day is this one. Done with set up #1.

A Little Geek Tip for You

Here's a little geek tip for you all.

If you have a hard time remembering your fav web sites, articles, recipes, where you put receipts, then you need to start using this little app called "Evernote".

Evernote works via the web and it also has software for your Windoze computer, Mac, iPhone, iPad or just about any other mobile device.

Here is a link to their site, check it out!

NOTE: I use it regularly, and the FREE version is enough for me. If you have a backlog of information you want to load into it, you may want to subscribe to the pro version for a bit until your all caught up.

If you are Mac user, check out this little video on some of the new features coming in Evernote 5.0

Here are a list of some of the things I track in Evernote:

- photography tips
- any business related invoice or expense
- photography client contracts

And something else that is really cool. You can share a "notebook" with friends who also use Evernote. Any time one of you updates that notebook, you all get their notes too. GREAT FOR PLANNING A TRIP!
